Removal of heavy metals from soil using the green glass adsorbent transformed from waste LCD panel glass.

Absrtact
Heavy metals contaminated rural soil is one of the crucial issue in Taiwan. In the past, industrial waste containing heavy metals was discharged to the environment without disposal properly, causing heavy metals entered and accumulated in the soil. These heavy metals will be adsorbed by plants or crops and finally enter the human body through the food chain then harm people’s health. Our work team has established a LCD panel glass modification technology which transform waste LCD panel glass to green glass adsorbent. Green glass adsorbent not only retains LCD panel glass’ high chemical and acid resistance, but also has high performance in heavy metals removal. This material can be reuse after desorption and regeneration, which makes it become a high efficiency and environment friendly adsorption material. In this project, green glass adsorbent is applied to the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil. The heavy metal in the soil is extracted into the acid eluent by soil acid leaching method. The acid eluent which contains high concentration of heavy metal ions will be treated by green glass adsorbent until the concentration of heavy metal ions lower than effluent standard, so acid eluent can be reused. Soil acid leaching is a positive method of remediation because it can actually remove heavy metals from the soil, and soil after remedying and restoration is able to backfill to farmland. Waste water containing heavy metal is treated by green glass adsorbent to lower the generation of toxic slurry comparing to chemical coagulation process. Also, using green glass adsorbent can reduce the price of wastewater treatment to reduce the cost of remediation, which is beneficial to practical application.
